Original GLO Township Surveys, 1833-1836Original township survey maps of Porter County . . . .
The maps below represent the earliest township and
range public land surveys for Porter County. These maps were made under the
direction of the suveyor generals of the United States General Land Office. The
majority of the Porter County surveys were commissioned and completed between
1833 and 1836, though the survey for Township 38 North, Range 5 West,
representing the far northeastern corner of Pine Township, was completed in
November of 1829.
Each plat covers all or part of one township, a township being composed of 36
sections or one square mile (one section equals 640 acres). Each plat shows
township and sections lines, and plats may show existing waterways, drainages,
swamplands, forested areas, roads and trails, Native American villages and
burial mounds, boundaries of land claims and grants, cultivated fields, and
sections reserved for schools.
Some maps also display annotations that show land
entry numbers that refer to the original land sale or disposition of parcels to
the first land owners. In a few instances, the name of the original landowner
will appear on the plat.
