Index of Obituaries Published from 1938 to Present
Compiled by the Genealogy Department of the Porter
County Public Library, this
extensive index covers obituaries and death notices published in The
Vidette-Messenger (1938 to 1994) and its successor The Vidette-Times
(1995-present). The index includes surname, first name, middle name or initial,
maiden name (if applicable), age at death, date of death, date of notice
publication, and the residence of the deceased.
Copies of the obituaries found in the index can be obtained for a minimal fee
from the Porter County Public Library-Valparaiso Branch using their
Obituary Request Form.
Porter County Obituaries and Death Notices: Volume I
This book, published by the Northwest Indiana Genealogical Society, is a complete compendium of fully transcribed obituaries and death notices published in The Chesterton Tribune prior to 1900. The 429 page book, which includes an index of all names appearing in the notices (more than 6,700), is available for purchase from the Northwest Indiana Genealogical Society (NWIGS Publications). The index of names appearing in the book is also available for viewing online (NWIGS Every Name Index, Volume I).
Porter County Obituaries and Death Notices: Volume II
This book, published by the Northwest Indiana Genealogical Society, is a complete compendium of fully transcribed obituaries and death notices published prior to 1900 in the following Valparaiso newspapers: Western Ranger, Practical Observer, Valparaiso Practical Observer, Vidette and Republic, and the Porter County Vidette. The 406 page book, which includes an index of all names appearing in the notices (more than 6,500), is available for purchase from the Northwest Indiana Genealogical Society (NWIGS Publications).
