John Zabel

DOINGS AT HOME.
Last Monday forenoon John Zabel, a brakeman on the Lake Shore road, met his death, while on duty near Pine. At the time he unoccupied the engine from some flat cars, and was standing with one foot on a flat car, and the other on the long draw-bar of the engine. After drawing the pin, he signaled to the engineer to go ahead, and then attempted to walk on the draw-bar to the pilot of the engine. He slipped and fell, sixteen cars passing over him, and his body and limbs horribly mangled. When he was taken from under the wheels, he was alive, and the man put him in a caboose and brought him to Chesterton for treatment. The poor fellow lived but a short time after arriving here. The Coroner was notified and in the afternoon held an inquest over the remains. The young man's father arrived from Elkhart on the evening train and had the remains taken home on the 9:30 train. Zabel was a young man, about 21 years of age, and had been working on the road about two months.
