Robert Wood

FATHER OF CONGRESSMAN WILL R. WOOD DEAD

Lafayette, Ind., March 24. -- Robert Wood, the venerable father of Congressman Will R. Wood, died quite suddenly last night at 7:30 o'clock at his home in Oxford. He was taken suddenly ill on Wednesday and death ensued before Congressman Wood, who had been summoned from Washington, D. C., arrived.

Robert Wood was one of the best known citizens of Benton county. He was a harnessmaker, and for fifty-two years conducted a shop in the same building in Oxford. He retired five years ago. For years he was the only harnessmaker in Benton county and did a thriving business. It was in his father's shop that Congressman Wood learned the trade, giving it up when he was 17 years old to engage in the study of law.

Mr. Wood was 84 years old and nearly all his life was spent in Oxford. He was united in marriage with Matilda Hickman, who, with the following children, survives: Mrs. Edward Morse, of Oxford; Mrs. Campbell, of Stockton, Ill., and Will R. Wood, of this city.
