John M. Williams

Death again has entered our fair town and selected for its victim, a leading citizen. But, in the death of John Williams, what a lesson may be learned. Here was a man who lived an honored life, and fitting was his end. He was not a statesman, nor a renowned general. He was not a millionaire, nor a philosopher. He was a simple private in the army and a private citizen. He filled his sphere completely. He did his duty well, and by his simple honesty and sturdy manhood, he won his way into the hearts of his fellow citizens, and was respected by them. His death was surrounded by a loving wife and children, and his remains were followed to their last resting place by not only the entire community, but also by the leading men of our county. He left to his children a noble heritage -- an honored name.
