J. H. Wight

CHESTERTON CHIPS
J. H. Wight, a Lakeshore brakeman, met with a horrible death at Dune Park, Saturday, May 7. Two switch engines were going west, one on the north and the other on the south track, one a little behind the other. Wight stood on the platform of the engine on the north track, and just opposite of the Rolla boarding house he hopped off, alighting on the south track just in time to be struck down by the second engine. He was rolled up under the locomotive, and crushed out of all human shape before the engine could be stopped and the body extricated. Death was instantaneous. The body was brought to Chesterton and coffined by Undertaker Lundberg. On Sunday Coroner Ketcham came down and held and inquest. Upon order of the superintendent the body was then shjpped to Chicago and turned over to the family. Wight was 32 years old, and had been working at Dune Park two weeks. He leaves a wife and two children in destitute circumstances in Chicago. The railroad men say he was a good man, and was well liked by his fellow workers. He evidently did not know the second engine was following the one he rode on, or that it was on the second track. It seems a bit careless on someone's side.
