Grace Vernie Walker

GRACE VERNIE WALKER.
Again we are called upon to chronicle the death of a sweet child -- this time the daughter of well-known former citizens, Mr. and Mrs. John Walker, now residents of Whiting, Ind. Grace Verne Walker was born in Chesterton Oct. 15, 1876, and died at her home in Whiting on Friday, Oct. 3, 1890, and was consequently 13 years, 11 months, and 18 days old at the time her of death. She died of heart and lung troubles, after a very brief illness. She was taken sick on Tuesday night of last week, and lived until Friday at 3:30 in the afternoon. Through her illness she retained consciousness to the last, and exhibited a spirit of christian fortitude and resignation unlooked for in one of her years. Her end was peaceful and painless.

Grace was the daughter of a working-man. Though her illness, working men, kind and true waited on her, and if any sacrifice upon their part would have kept her from the grave, it would have been made. The remains were brought to Chesterton Saturday, and placed in the home of her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. John C. Coulter, and on Sunday at 2 o'clock the funeral service was held in the M. E. Church. These were conducted by a working man, Mr. Josiah Castleman, in the absence of the pastor. The services were very touching, and Mr. Castleman preached a sermon that did justice to his subject. The remains were followed to their last resting place by a large concourse of friends and relatives, and laid away, while the spirit had gone to meet her maker.

While Grace is surely happy now, and the sorrowing parents have that face to console themselves with, yet they need the sympathy of their friends, for those who are left behind are always the real sufferers. May a Divine Providence give them the strength to hear their burden bravely.
