Vincent Thomas

OBITUARY.
THOMAS. -- Vincent Thomas was born in Ohio in the year 1822, at the age of 12 years he came with his Father to Laporte county Indiana, and after residing there two years removed to Porter county Ind., where he has resided until his death of Tuesday, September 30, 1879.

At the age of 27 he was elected to the office of sheriff of Porter county, which office he filled with honor. In 1851 at the age of 29, he was married to Cecelia Oaks, daughter of David Oaks, Esq., late of this county. His wife and nine children all survive him. Again in the year 1859 he was elected to the office of sheriff of Porter county Indiana, which office he filled two years more. Since that time he has been classed as one of the active business men of our city until disease laid hold upon him about six years ago. A portion of that time he spent in California hoping to be benefited by the climate. After being there two years, disappointed of ever gaining his health he returned to his family where he has suffered untold agony, but "the Lord giveth and the Lord taketh away; blessed be the name of the Lord."

The funeral service too place this morning at 10 o'clock from the Presbyterian church. The sermon was preached by Rev. Robert Beer, after which the body was buried at Chesterton.
