Gilbert Stevens

Another Warning -- Sudden Death!

Mr. Gilbert Stevens, residing near the south-west corner of this town, aged 50 or 60 years, was complaining last Sunday evening as if of a bad cold. Monday morning he was sick and sent for a physician. In the afternoon he was thought better, but in a few minutes after was dead. He has left a wife and several children who are entitled to the sympathies, and if need be the charities of the public.

We mention it not with disrespect, but with the kindest feelings toward his family and friends, -- he was an unhappy victim of intemperance in the use of strong drink. We are told he had a day or two before shown symptoms of delirium tremens, and that the washing of his body rubbed off the skin in places, owing to the body being so burned with ardent spirits.

We give the fact thus plainly as due to the public for a warning to those who are following the same downward path. But for the influence of liquor, Mr. Stevens would have been a worthy and respected citizen, for he had a good soul; and the best of those now following in his footsteps, or only beginning to contract such habits, may likely worry through a more wretched life to a more miserable death!
