Bernard Smith

Death Loves a Shining Mark.
Lafayette Sunday Times, Nov. 15]

Last Friday at noon, Bernard Smith, son of Hon. B. Wilson Smith of this city, after a lingering illness of consumption, quietly passed away. While not 20 years of age, yet he was a young man of rare ability and when taken ill, nearly a year ago, was preparing for a thorough course of classical instruction. His knowledge of history was so complete that he was regarded as one of the best historical references in the city, retaining dates and events with an accuracy that elicited expressions of surprise from those who consulted him. But with all his scholastic attainments, his proficiency in acquirements beyond his years, yet it was his uniformly exemplary deportment that so endeared him to all with whom he came in contact. So pure in heart and action was he that he seemed invulnerable to any demoralizing influence. All of his life has been surrounded by a consistent Christian contact, and when at the age of fourteen he united himself with Trinity church, then under the ministration of Rev. H. A. Goben, he glided easily into a marked excellence of Christian character. In this, the hour of greatest bereavement in the lives of his devoted parents and affectionate sisters they have the comforting assurance that as a reward for his devotion to them, to his church, and to all the duties assigned to him, his home hereafter will be "eternal in the heavens."
