Abbie M. Sheffield

MY DARLING.
[Lines selected in memory of Abbie M. Sheffield, who died recently in Porter township, Ind.]

It was a day of quiet gladness,
When my winsome darling came;
Now it is with loving sadness,
That I pause to write her name.

Deep, dark eyes -- long silken lashes
Greeting ever my fond gaze;
With their happy loving glances,
Brightening all my weary days.

Baby lips so sweet and tender,
With fondest kisses oft I pressed;
Her sunny head I loved to gather,
Close unto my aching breast.

Scarce one year was she our sunbeam
Laughing, cooing little dove;
Then -- one angel more was numbered
With the infant hosts above.

Shall I ever forget the morning
They led me to her cradle bed,
Telling me in softened whispers
That my darling Abbie was dead?

How with bitter, bitter weeping,
I severed one bright silken curl --
Kissed the dimpled hands and eyelids
Closed forever in this world.

Our home, how dark and silent,
All its light and joy has fled
With the fairy form that's sleeping
In her lowly narrow bed.

Yet, at alast, I have grown calmer,
Tears have given place to sighs;
For I feel my darlings' waiting
For me up beyond the skies.

Once again my arms shall hold her,
Where no cruel death will dare
Snatch from me my precious loved one,
For only peace and joy are there.
