John Sams

ONE KILLED TWO INJURED IN ACCIDENT
(From Thursday's Daily)

John Sams, 50 years old, of this city, a wealthy retired farmer, who just moved here from Boone township, was instantly killed, and Clyde Johnson, 32, and Ross Johnson, 22, both of Boone Grove, were seriously injured when their automobile was struck by a northbound Lake Erie train near Laporte at 1 o'clock this afternoon. Mr. Sams was killed instantly, his skull being fractured. Clyde Johnson suffered a compound fracture of the left arm and is otherwise uninjured. Ross Johnson was badly burned about the head and face. The automobile caught fire soon after it was hurled into the ditch.

The body of Mr. Sams was taken to Weir & Petering's morgue in Laporte, and the Johnson brothers are confined in the Laporte hospital. News of the tragedy reached here soon after it occurred, and shocked the many friends of the victims.

The three men had been to the Dr. Smith sale and were on their way home. Ross Johnson was driving, and sat alone in the front seat. At the Park road crossing, which is in a deep cut, the locomotive struck the rear of the machine, tossed it into the ditch and the auto immediately took fire. Mr. Sams was on the side next to the engine and received the full force of the impact.

Mr. Sams had moved here from his farm in Boone township only a short time ago, and bought the Dr. C. L. Bartholomew place at the corner of Morgan and Monroe streets. He leaves a family.

Clyde Johnson is a tenant on one of Mr. Sams' farms. He has a young wife but no children. Ross is his single brother, who is associated with him in agriculture.
