Levi Rowley

OBITUARY.
Mr. Levi Rowley.

In the death of this gentleman Valparaiso mourns the loss of a most excellent gentleman and useful citizen. His business and social character was above reproach, while his gentleness and kindness of heart endeared him to those who formed his acquaintance. He was born in Canandaigua, N. Y., March 31st, 1816, removed to Mt. Vernon, O., when a young man, and there on the 11th of February, 1845, was married to Miss Lydia C. Rouse, who now survives him. In April, 1875, he removed with his family (wife and three sons) to Valparaiso, engaging in the drug business. In the summer of 1876, Amos, one of the sons, died after a very brief illness, to the great grief not only of the family, but of the whole community.

In 1870 Mr. Rowley made a public profession of religion, uniting with the Congregational church of Mt. Vernon, after coming here he united with the Presbyterian church. On Sunday, the 8th inst., he attended church morning and evening, as was his custom. On that night he retired to bed in his usual health, but before morning was seized witht he illness that resulted in his death Saturday P. M., the 21st inst. During his painful illness he was well sustained by his hope of eternal life through Jesus Christ, and very peacefully passed from death to the Saviour's presence. The remains were interred in the new cemetery on Monday P. M., the funeral services having been held at his late residence and conducted by his pastor, assisted by the pastors of the Baptist and Methodist churches.
