John R. Reed

FATAL ACCIDENT ON THE M. S. RAILROAD. -- We learn by a gentleman from Westville, that a Mr. John R. Read was killed yesterday afternoon about 4 o'clock, near the crossing of the M. S. and New Albany Railroads, in the following manner:

Being acquainted with the acting engineer, he was passing from the luggage car to the locomotive, and by a misstep fell between the locomotive and tender. Of course he was very much mutilated, and almost instantly killed. He was just able to request that word be communicated to his wife. Mr. Reed had been employed for years as an engineer on this railroad, but had more recently been engaged in building a mill, somewhere, we are told in the vicinity of the Kankakee. He was at the time on his way to Laporte, taking with him a man who had been in his employ, but had just had both legs broken and suffered other serious and probably fatal injuries, by a saw log rolling over him, and whose friends live in Laporte. Mrs. Reed has been for some time boarding at the house of Mrs. Pierce, on Morgan Prairie. The funeral is to be at the house of Mr. Sheldon Beach, to-morrow, (Sunday) at 2 o'clock P. M.

[The following new item is found in the December 1, 1853, issue of the Practical Observer concerning John R. Reed:
We have been informed by a gentleman who has opportunity in knowing, that the report we published last Saturday of John R. Reed, being killed on the railroad, was all a fabrication, made up by Reed himself, and sent to his wife and neighbors by a stranger, from motives best known to himself. -- The person who related the curcumstances at this office doubtless believed them real.]
