Patrick O'Connor

Patrick O'Connor died at his home in Liberty township, Monday, March 16, after a brief illness from lung fever. He was sixty-one years old, and the greater portion of his life was spent in this country, making him one of our early pioneers. The funeral was held Thursday, services being conducted in St. Patrick's church, Chesterton. Deceased leaves a family of a wife and three children in comfortable circumstances. He was one of our substantial farmers, widely known, and universally respected. His death is a genuine loss to this community.

Patrick O'Connor was born in Sligo county, Ireland, and came to Valparaiso in the spring of 1856, where he lived six years, when he came to Chesterton. In 1861 he went south to visit his sister and on his arrival, was seized by the rebels and pressed into the rebel army and held until the capture of Vicksburg. Upon his release he returned to Chesterton, and settled on his farm two miles south.

Among those who attended the funeral from abroad were: M. O'Connor, M. Moynehan, Mary, Tom, and Kittie O'Connor, Chicago; Mr. and Mrs. Hayes, of Hammond; Maggie Carr, of Laporte; Annie, Philip and James O'Connor, Millers; Andrew and James O'Connor, Valparaiso; and Mary Laden, of Crown Point.
