Melville N. O'Brien

OBITUARY.
DIED -- In this village, on Wednesday the 20th inst., of a cancerous affection of the stomach, Bro. Melville N. O'Brien, aged 38 years.

The deceased was born in Randolph county, Virginia, and emigrated to this country some years since, the latter of which has been spent in this county, engaged in agricultural pursuits. Bro. O'Brien experienced religion, and united with the M. E. Church, in early life; and from that time until his death he has borne an irreproachable and consistent christian character; exemplifying to all around by his daily walk and conversation that he had Christ formed within the hope of glory.

During his long protracted illness, he gave frequent assurance that the religion of his early choice was still able to bear him up beneath all of his afflictions, and to enable him to view death with composure, and to explain without a doubt, "I know that my Redeemer liveth," and when the wheels of life at last ceased to move, his ransomed spirit entered upon the joys of eternal felecity.

His life had been such while here, as to endear him to all by whom he was known, and the large concouse of citizens in attendance at his funeral, gave evidence to all of the esteem in which he was held.

Bro. O'Brien was also a member of the Masonic fraternity, and his funeral rites were celebrated in a grand and imposing manner, by that order agreeably to their custom. In his death the church and the lodge have both lost a valuable and much-loved brother, and heaven has gained another blood-bought citizen.

"Weep not for a brother deceased
Our loss is his infinite gain
A soul out of prison released
And freed from its bodily chain;
With songs let us follow his flight
And mount with his spirit above,
Escaped to the mansions of light,
And lodged in the Eden of love."
