Charles Nelson

PORTAGE CENTER, Ind. -- On Tuesday of last week Charles Nelson, who lives near Lake Station, went down into an old well to excavate a brick in it. When down the well a few feet, and after throwing out a few brick, the top caved in, throwing him to the bottom and buried him under about six feet of earth and brick. His wife was absent from home at the time and when she returned in the evening, she missed him, but thought he had gone to Lake Station, as he sometimes did, and did not look for him until morning, when she soon found evidence of his being in the well, and after four or five hours work, dug him out. The indications show that the victim was killed instantly. He was a Swede, 23 years old, and had been married only a few months. His body was taken to Chicago for burial.
