Bertie Mead

WEDNESDAY.
In the hurry and confusion of collecting news for yesterday's Vidette we had to take and give the most reliable account that we could get about the holocaust, which seems now to have been in unimportant points defestive and erroneous. The boy burnt was known as Bertie Mead, a son of Lewis Mead and wife both dead, and was a good and trusted lad, who did not smoke. The fire originiated in the kitchen, worked its way up stairs and through the boy's open bedroom door, and the boy was first to give alarm and wake up Mr. Hicks by telling him the house was all afire. The old man hurried up another stairway to a door behind the boy's bed, but could not open it till he went down and got an ax, and when he broke it open flames burst upon him forcing him away altho' he even then could hear some struggling of the boy, who probably however must by that time have become unconscious. Isn't a fair presumption that to shield himself from fire he covered up in bed and suffered death by smothering before the fire touched him? This account is given now by one who got it right from Mr. Hicks himself, and must bejust near the circumstantial facts as he in such a moment of excitement could perceve and afterward explain.
