A. P. Johnson

PORTER POINTERS
Capt. A. P. Johnson, who was drowned at Millers last Friday, had a varied experience. He left Sweden as captain of a vessel, and when in the southern seas, a steamer ran into his ship and cut it in two. The crew got into their life boats, but the steamer immediately put out its lights and steamed off without trying to save anybody. Johnson and his crew floated on the ocean five days before they were picked up, and were taken to New Orleans. Johnson then came to Millers, to his relative, Charles Blank, and worked on the section. The next year he went sailing on Lake Michigan as mate. He was caught in a terrible storm in the extreme northwest part of the lake, and here the boat was breeched, and the crew walked three miles in wet clothes, to a farm house and were turned away. It was five miles to the next house and before they could reach it their clothes were frozen to their bodies. From the effects of this wreck Johnson was an invalid for eight years, and at the time of his death, was just getting on his feet again. He had a fishing rig which was considered the best on the lake. The tragedy of last Friday swept away all the support from his widow, and leaves her with four small children. She lost husband, son and half brother. Everyone speaks in the highest terms of all the dead men, and the sympathy of all is with the bereaved family.
