Gustavia Albertina Johanson

DEATH.
Rock City Review.

DIED. -- At 3 o'clock a. m., Friday, August 10, 1888, Gustavia Albertina, wife of Rev. A. Chalman, of the Swedish Lutheran church, aged 47 years, 10 months and 26 days.

The immediate cause of her death was cholera morbus, although she had been troubled with chronic disease for several years, the last illness being very sudden and unexpected. The funeral occurred from the Sv. Lutheran church, at 2 p. m., On Sunday, Aug. 12, conducted by Revs. G. Lundahl, of South Chicago, who spoke in Scandiavian, and Rev. Secender of St. Charles, who spoke in English. The occasion was of the most sad and pathetic that ever occurred to this portion of our people, and nearly the entire congregation of the church at Aurora, over which the afflicted pastor also presides, attended the ceremonies, being accomodated by the railroad company with a special train; large numbers were also present from Chicago, Elgin, St. Charles, and other places, and the procession was among the largest of the large funerals held in this place during the past year. The interior of the church was profusely decorated by the congregation, each and all appearing to vie with each other in their efforts to show respect and sympathy. A beautiful floral emblem in suggestive form of a pearly gate was the first of the Aurora congregation, and was in charge of a committee of six ladies, two from each Aurora, Batavia, Chicago, namely Mrs. Bauman, Mrs. Molmer, Aurora, Mrs. Engstrum, Mrs. John B. Lundorg, Batavia; Mrs. John Eckerman, Miss Seraphia Peterson, Chicago, who guarded the gate during the exercises at the church and also at the cemetery. This beautiful emblem was photographed by Mr. Thorsen on Monday.

Gustavia Albertina Johanson was born in Gerdserum, Sweden, Sept. 14, 1840, and at the age of 26 was married to A. Challman, on January 1, 1866, at Guttenburg, Sweden, and was the mother of eight children, the oldest, Samuel, being now 21 years of age, and the youngest Esther, eight years old. In 1868 they immigrated to America and settled at Porter, Indiana, where Mr. C was occupied as a teacher, moving to Chicago, he followed the same vocation for three years and was then ordained for the ministry, and received a call to preach at his former home in the Hoosier state, where he did faithful service for eleven years, and in 1886 was called to his present charge at Batavia and Aurora, where he and his family have endeared themselves to all who know them.
