John Holland

MORTUARY RECORD.

Again the sad duty devolves upon us to record the death of one of our most beloved pioneers. One who had won for himself the respect and admiration of all whose good fortune it was to know him.

John Holland was born near Dublin, Ireland, March 26, 1810, and died at his home near Chesterton, June 13, 1895, aged eighty-five years, two months and seventeen days.

In 1834 he was united in marriage to Annie Priest, and came to America in the same year. To them were born one daughter and six sons, five of whom survive him.

On his arrival in America he first settled at Toronto, Canada, during which time he enlisted in the Patriot war of 1838. He then moved to New York, and in 1854 came to Indiana, settling in Porter county, where he remained until his death.

For sixteen years Mr. Holland served as Justice of the Peace.

For some time before his death he fully realized that his life was drawing to a close, but was prepared to meet his God, and often expressed a desire to go. The funeral was held in St. Patrick's church, Chesterton, June 15th, at 9:00 a. m., the services being conducted by Rev. Joseph F. Kroll, and the remains were followed to its last resting place by a large number of relatives and friends.

During John Holland's forty-one years of life in Porter county, he made many warm friends, who will ever bear fresh in their memory his many beloved and kind acts. He was always firm in expressing his opinion in what he believed to be good of all mankind. It can well be said that John Holland can face his God with a soul that is untarnished by any wrong act, or blotted by any unjust deed. THE TRIBUNE joins with his many friends in extending its sincerest sympathy to the bereaved family during their hours of sadness.
