James O. Hill

CHESTERTON CHIPS
The remains of James O. Hill, were brought to Chesterton from Hammond Tuesday morning, Jan. 26, for interment. The funeral services were postponed until 3 p. m. to await the arrival of relatives from Jackson Center, who were unavoidably delayed. The services were held at the residence of Guy Pratt, and conducted by Rev. R. Smith, of the Porter Christian Church, and the remains interred in the Chesterton cemetery.

James O. Hill, was born at Cicero, Onandagua County, New York, October 23, 1816, and died at Hammond, Lake Co., Ind., Jan. 22, 1897, aged 80 years, 2 months, and 29 days. He was married to Deborah Freeland, May 19, 1839, at Conquest, Cayuga Co., New York, and seven children were born to them, of whom three survive: Mrs. Martha Pratt, Mrs. Rhoda Simpson and Peter Hill. He came to Indiana in 1856, and settled in Jackson township, and in 1858, came to Chesterton until 1865. In 1882 he emigrated to Kansas, and returned to Indiana in 1894. While in Kansas, he became a member of the Christian Church, and was a member up to the time of his death. He leaves three brothers and three sisters, his fourth wife, seventeen grand children and six grand children to mourn his loss. He was a kind husband and a loving father.
