John A. Hicks
John A. Hicks, 456 West Chicago street, passed away at his home on Wednesday at 3:20 p. m., after a serious illness of three weeks.

John A. Hicks was born in Brooklyn, N. Y., Sept. 6, 1840. In 1854 he, with his parents, moved to Porter county, where he remained until he responded to the call of his country in 1862. He served in Company C, 99th Indiana volunteers, under Captain Scott, for three years, when he was honorably discharged. He returned to Porter county to engage in the occupation of farming until twenty years ago, when he moved to Valparaiso where he has since made his home.

December 28, 1864, Mr. Hicks was united in marriage to Sarah C. Smith, who preceded him in death five years ago. To this union were two children, Charles S. Hicks, of this city, and Mrs. Bertha Moore, of Iiama, Alberta, Canada, who, with Harry E. Smith, a step-son, and one brother, William T. Hicks, survive the brother.
