George Herron

One More Victim.
On Saturday, Feb. 11th George Herron, a section hand in the employ of the B. & O. railroad, and living at Miller Station, came to Chesterton for a spree. After doing some trading at the stores, he went to the saloons, and drank, until he was badly intoxicated. He then started down the Lake Shore railroad track, and had reached a point near the organ factory when he staggered and fell across the track, helpless and insensible. This was about half past two o'clock in the afternoon. The lightening train, No. 1 going west, due here at 8:30 was late that day, and came through at 2:35. Charlie Forbes, a cripple saw Herron on the track and came to the depot and notified the agent. Mr. Whitlock started down the track, and had got but a short distance, when the passenger train hove in sight, and before anything could be done to stop the train, it had dashed past the depot, and struck the unfortunate victim. Herron was knocked off the track and thrown nearly twenty feet. Death was instantaneous. The body was taken to the depot and Coroner Letherman sent for, who arrived in the evening, and held an inquest over the remains.

Herron was an Englishman, 28 years old, and had worked on the B. & O. railroad about nine months. During that time he was very steady in his habits, a good worker, and liked by his companions. The only time he was seen under the influence of liquor was last Christmas, he drank some. About a week before the accident Herron told his boss, that he was going to have one good spree and quit. He explained by saying that his birthday was on the 11th of February, and that he intended to celebrate it. The poor fellow kept his word. He will drink no more.
