In Memoriam. -- Mrs. Mary Buel.
Died, at her home in this city, July 16, 1884, Mary Herr Buel, aged 64 years.
Deceased was born in Washington Co., Maryland, and emigrated to Indiana in an early day. She was one of the oldest residents of this city, having lived here and in this immediate vicinity for forty-four years. For forty-one years she has been the wife of Capt. Henry M. Buel, who survives her. Mrs. Buel was an excellent wife and model housekeeper. She was exceedingly fond of her home and devoted herself to her household duties. She was noted in this community for her hospitality. Ever since she became a mistress of a home, she has been known far and wide for her liberality in entertaining her friends. Her house has been the favorite resort of the young people of her acquaintance. When she lived on a farm near this city, as she did for many years, her large circle of young friends in this city esteemed it a great treat to drive out to Aunt Mary's for a dinner or an evening, feeling as they did, that they were always sure of a welcome. For thirty years each generation that has grown up in this neighborhood have known her as "Aunt Mary," and have sought her company and enjoyed the good cheer of her home as the one preceeding had done. She held an enviable place in the hearts of all who knew her, both old and young. Cheerful, vivacious, she entered into innocent amusements of the young with zest that made her their chosen companion. Her deep piety and the sensible manner in which she dealt with the stern problems of life made her also the chosen companion of those of her own age as well as the comforter of the sick and afflicted. She has been a friend, a counsellor, a companion to many who now sincerely mourn her, and will ever bear her in grateful rememberance.
She was not only recognized for her duty to her fellows, but to her God, and during her long life among this people has set them an example of christian devotion and charity which rests as a benediction upon them.
A large concourse of friends followed her remains to their last resting place on the 18th inst.
