Edward Haley

A fatal accident occurred at New Porter on the evening of July 4th. Edward Haley, a fisherman in the employ of Frank Quick, was returning from Michigan City on the evening train and as it approached the station he jumped off within three or four rods of the depot. Being crippled in one limb he missed his footing and fell, striking his head on the platform, fracturing his skull, while on care passed over his leg crushing it terribly. Dr. Marr was immediately summoned and pronounced it a very dangerous injury. He was taken to Chesterton where Dr. Marr amputated the limb performing what is known as the bloodless operation. The patient continued to sink and died at four o'clock the next morning. His friends, who were sent for, had him buried in the village cemetery at Chesterton. Dr. Paramore held an inquest, a report of which is published among our legal advertisements.
