John Gondring, 86, father of the great brick industry at Porter that flourished there for years, died recently in Columbus, Neb. When farming in the white clay seemed hard, Mr. Gondring put a quantity of the soil in a sack, walked to Chicago with it, showed it to brickmakers, and the result was the sale of his farm at a big price, and the establishment of the yards.
