Mary Gibbs

Death of Mrs. W. Gibbs.

Mary Gordon was born July 18th, 1831, in the Dominion of Canada. She was the daughter of Joseph and Ruth Gordon, and came with her parents to this country when she was about nine or ten years of age. Her parents were among the early settlers at Hickory Point, and amid the privations and scenes of a new country she grew up to womanhood. She was joined in marriage to Wm. Gibbs, May 20, 1852, by Elder Aaron Canada, of the Baptist church, and for 28 years they have traveled life's road together and have shared the common joys and sorrows incident to this changeful life. The only childish tie that was given to more firmly bind them together was Laura E. Coates.

She united with the M. E. church in the winter of 1848, and professed to find peace by believing in Christ as her personal Savior. For thirty-two years she has had her home in the church. She was never an active worker in the church, but always seemed solicitous in its success.

For several months past, as her physical nature has been weakening, her spiritual strength has been increasing, and I have no doubt but she was found ready to die. For near thirty years she's been troubled with a severe cough, but her general health was not affected until about 14 years ago. Since that time she has been going gradually down. For the last three years she has been unable to do but very little, and for two months she has been closely shut up in her own room, much of that time confined to her bed. At half-past nine o'clock, April 8, 1880, the weary wheels of life stood still, and Mary Gibbs was not for the soul had gone.

A few evenings since, when conscious that her end was near, she made all necessary arrangements about her funeral and burial, stating that she wanted to be buried here, so that bereft loved ones could visit her tomb.
