Russell Dorr

OBITUARY.
One by one the early settlers of Northern Indiana are passing away. Russell Dorr, Esq., one of the pioneers of Porter county, died on Saturday, the 8th inst., after a painful illness of thirteen weeks.

Mr. Dorr was born in Athens, Ohio, in 1812. Early in the fall of 1834, Barak Dorr and sons (Edward, Russell and others), accompanied by Jacob Wolf and his sons John, Jacob, Josephus and others, started on a long, and then, perilous journey overland to the frontier. After prospecting through the counties of Porter and Lake they settled on Salt Creek, near Gossett's mill pond, where Russell Dorr lived until 1864, when he removed to Valparaiso to educate his daughters.

In the death of Mr. Dorr the county loses a valuable citizen -- one in whom the public had unlimited confidence. He has held several offices, and among them county commissioner, township trustee, and justice of the peace.

Mr. Dorr was buried from his residence on Sunday, the funeral services being conducted by Hon. H. A. Gillette. The Free Masons took charge of the remains and laid them away in the new cemetery, to await the "resurrection morn." "Peace be to his ashes."
