William Cronacan

OBITUARY.
CRONACAN. -- Died at his residence near Valparaiso, Ind., on Monday, Jan. 20, 1879, after a brief illness, Wm. Cronacan, one of Valparaiso's oldest citizens.

The deceased was born in the parish of Aglish, County waterford, Ireland, 1812. In 1847 he was joined in marriage to Miss Mary O'Flaherty; and in 1852 emigrated to New York. Three years afterward in left New York and removed to Indiana, a citizen of which state he remained until the time of his death. He had nine children, four of whom preceded him to that far off land, where the bitter pang of separation is never felt. His family is widely scattered; the ashes of one reposing beyond the sea, another in New York, and the remaining two lie in the old St. Paul's cemetery. The remains of Mr. Cronacan himself are interred in the new cemetery southeast of Valparaiso; and the large concourse of both Catholics and non-Catholics that followed them to the grave testified to the number of friends which his twenty-four years residence in Indiana had procured him. During the many trying scenes of his life, he maintained a strong adherence to the faith of his fathers, and was ever respected by all who knew him for his unimpeachablehonesty and uprightness of character. He passed away quietly and peacefully after an illness of a few days. His funeral which was largely attended by his friends not only at Valparaiso, but of Chicago and many of the neighboring towns, took place from St. Paul's Church at 10:30, Jan. 22. The funeral sermon, which was very affecting, was preached by Rev. M. O'Reilly. He was one of the very few men of whom every one speaks well, and we deeply regret out loss, but God in His wisdom has recalled the boon His love had given; and though the body moulders here the soul is safe in heaven.
