Samuel Choate

OBITUARY.
Mr. Samuel Choate died Sunday morning at his residence on Franklin street this city, at the age of 85 years.

He was the son of Col. Benjamin Mehitable Choate, and was born in Enfield, N. H., March 9, 1797. He was married at Boscawen, N. H., to Anna Choate. Six children were born to them, of whom only two survive, a son and a daughter, the former of whom lived in Texas, the latter having remained in the home of her father. Mr. Choate and his wife resided until 1862 in Enfield, where he was an honored citizen, filling at various times the positions of select-man, town surveyor, and justice of the peace. In 1862 he moved to Illinois for the benefit of his wife's health. There she died in August of the same year. In February 1863 Mr. Choate came with his family to this place, where he has resided ever since except a period of 6 months spent in Minnesota. He was converted to Christ at the age of 13, and has been an active Christian since that time. He became a member of the Congregational church in Enfield at the time of its organization, and during his residence at that place was clerk of the church. He joined the Prebyterian church in Valparaiso March 26, 1872. His death leaves a void in the hearts of a large circle of friends by whom he was known as an honest citizen and a faithful Christian. The sympathies of the community are with the daughter in her loneliness and sorrow, and with the far-away son whose heart will be bowed in grief by the news of the loved father's death.
