Nathaniel Campbell
DIED,
At his residence near Valparaiso, July 23d, of Dysentery, Mr. NATHANIEL CAMPBELL, in the 52d year of his age.
[The above notice, accompanied with an appropriate preamble and resolutions of the Division of the Sons of Temperance in this place, were published in our last paper; but are here republished in connexion with the following for the convenience of the family, in sending the information to their distant relative and friends.]
-- At the same place, on the 7th instant, of the same disease, his son HAMILTON D. CAMPBELL, in the 22d year of his age.
[The following Acrostic was written by an esteemed friend for the occasion:]
And gaze noe more on thy lov'd form and face;
Must I then leave thee with the mould'ring dead?
In vain to seek thee her again -- no trace
Left me, Yes, in fond memory's glass,
Truly each look, each word that thou has spoken,
Oft in review before my mind shall pass,
Nor e'er depart, 'till all earth's ties are broken.
At a special meeting of the Valparaiso Division, No. 126, Sons of Temperance, held at their Hall, on the evening of the 7th day of August, A. D., 1849, for the purpose of making preparatory arrangements for attending the funeral of Bro. HAMILTON CAMPBELL, the following preamble and resolutions were read and unanimously adopted:
WHEREAS, it has please the Allwise Providence to take from our fraternal circle, our worthy and mush esteemed Brother, HAMILTON D. CAMPBELL, it behooves us to heed this solemn admonition of alike summons that awaits us all: and while we cherish his memory, with the fond recollection of his many virtues, we can but express our melancholy feeling on the occasion. Therefore,
Resolved, That although we feel it our duty to acquiesce without murmuring to the will of Heaven under this sad bereavement, we record the death of HAMILTON D. CAMPBELL, with a deep sense of the loss we have sustained.
Resolved, That we recognize in Bro. CAMPBELL, while living, a true Son of Temperance, in the broadest sense of the term, ever ready and willing to the utmost exmost extent of his ability, to alleviate the sufferings of humanity -- promote the best interests of society and banish Intemperance from our land.
Resolved, That since it has pleased the Great Patriarch above to decree that our Brother should meet us no more on earth, we will cherish his memory and imitate his virtues, until we are called to meet him in that pure and holy clime, where Love, Purity, and Fidelity shall reign forever.
Resolved, That in this hope his worth shall be ever preserved in our memory, as fresh as ever green Cassia that fadeth not.
Resolved, That while we deeply sympathise with the bereaved widowed mother, and other relatives and friends of our deceased brother, we would say to them, weep not -- be fully resigned to the will of heaven, and say with one of old, "the Lord giveth, the Lord taketh away, and blessed be the name of the Lord."
Resolved, That we will attend the funeral of our deceased brother, at 2 o'clock, p. m. on to-morrow, clothed in the proper regalia of the Order -- that we will clothe our Charter and Emblems with mourning, and that we wear the usual badge of the Order on such occasions for thirty days.
Resolved, That a copy of the foregoing preamble and resolutions be presented to the family of the deceased, and that the Editors of the Practical Observer and Family Visitor be requested to publish the same in their respective papers.
