THREE MEN KILLED.
In a Railroad Wreck Near Otis On The Monon.

The heavy rain of Sunday evening was the direct cause of a fearful wreck on the Monon, about three-quarters of a mile north of Otis at 12.45 that night. The illfated train was a freight, southbound, and running slowly at the time.

The mill dam of the Reynolds mill broke and washed away the mill. The Monon has an old wooden bridge 300 feet below the mill, about thirty feet from the bed of the creek. At 12 o'clock the dam broke and caused the mill to float down the stream. This broke the piling under the bridge leaving only the stringers, ties and rails. The train approached this death trap, and the locomotive had almost got across when the crash came. It wentdown, and with it nine cars, loaded with farm produce, lumber, shaved hoops, etc. The engineer, fireman and head brakeman were instantly killed. There names were

GEO. MURRAY, engineer
GEO. BOWERS, fireman
ELMER BROWN, brakeman.

Murray leaves a wife and three children and was a cousin of Mrs. Vincent Tratebas, of this place. Brown, the brakeman, was formerly a brickyard employe at Porter, and is well known hereabouts. All of the victims lived in Michigan City. A large force of men were sent to the scene of the wreck at once, and by 3 o'clock Monday morning the bodies were removed.

The bridge has long been considered unsafe, and the company will undoubtedly have to pay heavy damages to the heirs of the victimes.

Fireman Brown was a cousin to the Broady's of Porter, and his remains were brought here Tuesday morning for burial. The funeral was held Tuesday afternoon, services being conducted in the M. E. church, by Rev. Jesse, and the remains buried in the Chesterton cemetery.
