Reason Bell

Valparaiso.
Reason Bell, of this city, is dead. The end came Saturday evening. For several years he has been failing, but not until three weeks ago, did he become bedridden. For 20 years Reason Bell was the Republican leader in Porter county, and he was credited with being the most accomplished worker the party had in his day. For sixteen years he served as auditor of the county, but for the past eight years he has lived in political retirement. Mr. Bell was the first white child born in Porter county, and was born in Washington township, Jan. 11, 1834. When a lad 15 years old, while working on a mowing machine, he met with an accident which resulted in the loss of his right foot. Since that time the limb had been amputated seven times, and was the prime cause of his death. The funeral services were held Monday afternoon from his late residence on Jefferson street, and conducted by Dr. Thomas, of Chicago.
