Local Seaman Loses Life

Robert Walter Holzbaur, 28, of Valparaiso, died recently of wounds received in action in the service of his country in the South Pacific theater of war.

This was the tragic news received today by his wife, Lois, of Long Beach, Calif., who is visiting with her husband's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Walter Holzbaur, on Flint lake road, north of the city.

Young Holzbaur was a ship's cook, 3rd class, U. S. Naval Reserve.

The message stated that further details will follow concerning his death as soon as facts are known.

The decedent was a graduate of the Knox, Ind., high school of 1935, and entered the service in January, 1944. Previous to that he was employed at McGill Manufacturing company.

He was well known as a baseball and softball player. In 1938 he tried out with the St. Louis Cardinals as a pitcher. Later he pitched for Knox and San Pierre baseball clubs. He played two years ago with the Valparaiso Kernels softball team which won the city championships.

Surviving besides the widow are two children, Roberta Ann, age, 4, and Phillip K., age 3; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Walter Holzbaur; two sisters, Margaret Holzbaur, of this city, and Mrs. Anita Krieger, of Los Angeles, Calif., and his grandmother, Mrs. Mary Holzbaur, who resides at the Holzbaur home on Flint lake road.

We desire to express our sincere thanks to the many friends for their thoughtful and kindly messages of sympathy sent us following the Navy announcement of the death of Seaman 3/c Robert W. Holzbaur, in action in the south Pacific. Also we desire to thank Rev. Stanley L. Shippey, of First Christian church, for his commendatory remarks concerning Robert in his Sunday sermon message.
