Smith Cemetery, Boone TownshipIndex of Smith Cemetery burials . . . .

The Smith Cemetery was located in the southeast quarter of the northeast quarter of Section 6, north of 650 South and west of 450 West. The 1876 plat map for Boone Township indicates that the land on which the cemetery was located was owned by Hurlburt, Scott, and Smith. The 1895 and 1906 township plat maps show that Fred Kern owned the property, with M. Brough later owning the property according to the 1921 plat map. None of the plat maps indicate the presence of a cemetery.

According to the cemetery index published for Boone Township in 1997 by the Northwest Indiana Genealogical Society, there were at least ten tombstones located at the Smith Cemetery. When Glen Buchanan purchased the property, the ten tombstones had been moved into a pile next to a building on the property [Buchanan purchased the property between 1938 and 1969 according to plat records]. All the tombstones were inscribed with the surname Smith.

Glen Buchanan wanted to build a structure on that portion of his property that was likely part of the burial ground. Upon the advice of an attorney, Buchanan dug a hole and piled the ten tombstones on top of one another and covered them with soil. The tombstone on the top of the pile was buried under three feet of soil. The tombstones were reportedly buried 60 to 75 feet north of the new building in close proximity to the location of the original cemetery.

Obituary and death notice research suggests that the following Smiths were interred in the Smith Cemetery: three children of Jarvis Smith, H. W. Smith, and Samantha Smith. Note that there is another Smith Cemetery in Porter Township, north of Boone Township.
