The Robbins Cemetery is a pioneer cemetery located along the south side of
Robbins Road at 325 West (southwest quarter of the northeast quarter of Section
20). A Presbyterian Church, constructed in 1852, once stood adjacent to the
cemetery. Numerous pioneers of Portage Township and Liberty Township are
interred in the cemetery.
The land on which the Robbins Cemetery is located was once owned by Samuel
Putnam Robbins, who emigrated to Porter County in 1835, hence the name of the
cemetery. When Samuel donated land and aided in the construction of the
Presbyterian Church, he also donated one acre of land for burial purposes. The
ground was later owned by James B. Robbins (son of Samuel), then
Chester Coe Robbins (son of James), followed by Robert and Fern Carolyn Robbins
Rowe (daughter of Chester). The cemetery appears on the Portage Township plat
maps published in 1895, 1906, and 1921.
The first burial in the Robbins Cemetery, according to available records,
appears to be that of Esther W. Robbins, who died on August 20, 1838, just two
weeks after her birth. Esther was a daughter of Samuel Putnam Robbins and his
wife Caroline (Coe) Robbins.
The Robbins Cemetery is reportedly a private cemetery, although it is entrusted
to and maintained by the Portage Township Trustee.
The Robbins Cemetery was read by Carol Crook, LuAnn Connors, Kathy Heckman, and
Donna McCormick in 1992 for the Northwest Indiana Genealogical Society. Numerous
updates and corrections have been made to the 1992 reading of the cemetery.
