CHARLES L. BARTHOLOMEW - Was born in Center Township, Porter County, Indiana, on November 15, 1877, the son of Charles W. and Margaret E. (Poor) Bartholomew, both of whom were natives of Porter County. C. W. was born May 30, 1853, and married July 4, 1875. The paternal grandfather was Washington Stevens Bartholomew, a native of Ohio, and the father of five children: Charles W., Artillus, Albert, Elma, and Dora. Charles W. Bartholomew was a farmer in his early years, and subsequently became a merchant in Valparaiso in partnership with Shed Herrick. He later was a commercial traveler, representing a wholesale grocery house, and in 1890 engaged in the furniture and undertaking business, first locating on Franklin Street and then in the old postoffice building on Washington Street. In 1909 he removed to the location still occupied by the firm known as the C. W. Bartholomew & Son, undertakers. He passed away after an honored and useful life November 29. 1925. The children born to this union were: Charles L.; H. L., of Milwaukee, Wisconsin; Alla, wife of Arthur Runyon; and Charlotte, the wife of Jack Burt. Charles L. Bartholomew was educated in the public schools of Valparaiso, and then entered the Chicago College of Dental Surgery, where he received the degree of D. D. S. in 1909. He established his practice in Valparaiso, later removing to Chicago, and on his return to Valparaiso discontinued his dental practice to enter the undertaking business in association with his father in 1922. He is now in active charge of the business. The equipment of this concern is one of the modern found in this region, and includes exclusive motor conveyances and other approved methods of conducting funerals. Mr. Bartholomew was united in marriage with Cora Louise, daughter of .Alfred and Octavia (Hawkins) Bannister of Valparaiso. Mrs. Bartholomew is a graduate of the department of music of Valparaiso University. To this union was born a son, Charles Robert. Mr. Bartholomew is a member of the National Dental Association, Indiana State Dental Association, Illinois State Dental Association, and Xi Si Psi fraternity. He also holds membership in the Indiana State Funeral Directors' Association, Chamber of Commerce, Kiwanis Club, Elks, Masons, and Modern Woodmen.
