Arthur Whitney
PUPIL WHIPPED AND DEATH ENSUES.
Principal of Hammond, Ind., School to be Charged With Man Slaughter.
HAMMOND, Oct. 18. -- W. H. Reichers, principal of the Robertsdale schools, recently whipped a pupil of the name of Arthur Whitney for alleged unruliness. Shortly thereafter the boy was taken ill and yesterday died. A post-mortem examination disclosed injuries to the spinal cord, which the physicians claimed to be due to the whipping.
Reichers was arrested upon a charge of assault and held under $500 bonds, which were furnished by Superintendent Belman of the city schools, who, it is said, approves of the teacher's methods and actions. The board of education has decided to stand by Reicher in the defense and will attempt to prove conclusively that he did no bodily injury to the child.
Professor Reichers is a graduate of Indiana normal school, a successful teacher and a resident of Crown Point.
Deputy Prosecutor Greenwald has prepared papers for the arrest of Reichers o the charge of manslaughter, and will withdraw the complaint as to assault.
The hearing will be before Justice Jones of Whiting. The affair has created no end of discussion as to the rights of the teachers in the matter of corporal punishment.
