There was a big wreck on the Lake Shore road at the river bridge near 100th street last Friday morning at 2 o'clock. A crew was running out a big train of empties to Dune Park, and backing out. Just as they were about to cross the river bridge, a boat came along, and was given the right of way. Hardly had the bridge been moved before the train went into it and the locomotive went into the river. The bridge was broken and the engineer and firemen went down with the engine, but fortunately escaped death. One of the bridge tenders, as he saw the engine about to strike the bridge, jumped into the river and was drowned. The other tender remained on the bridge and escaped unharmed. The train crew were arrested by the South Chicago authorities, but were bailed out by the railroad company. A switch has been built over the P. F. W. & C. tracks, and all Lake Shore trains will be run over its tracks across the river until a new bridge can be put in.
