A peculiar accident, resulting in the loss of a life, occurred on the Michigan Central road at Lake Station Saturday evening. A brakeman, preparing to oil the hot-boxes on a train pulling into the station, stepped from the first car to the tender. A sudden jolt of the locomotive in stopping precipitated him from the latter and he fell, striking upon a short post in the ground. Although the distance fallen was so short, the post penetrated his breast and he died within fifteen minutes.
[NOTE: The following issue of The Tribune (February 2, 1892; Volume 8, Number 44, Page 5, Column 6) reports the following: PORTAGE CENTER, Ind. -- We see in last week's Tribune the account of a brakeman of the M. C. railroad being killed at Lake Station. This must be a mistake as none of the railroad officials of Lake ever heard of it, so there must be some mistake in it.]
