Mary Thornton
Suicide.
Another unfortunate gone to rest. Mrs. Mary Thornton, of Westville, committed suicide in this city last evening. The evidence developed at the Coroner's inquest this morning shows the following facts, stated in as brief a manner as possible: Mrs. Thornton was in the city attending the trial in the negro rape and bastardy case, her daughter being the complaining witness. About five o'clock P. M. she left the Court House and went to the depot, with the apparent intention of returning home. At about seven o'clock it was discovered that she was sick, and she was conveyed to the Tremont House and a messenger sent after Dr. Darling. It was evident at that time that the case was too far gone for help, and the unfortunate woman died at a little before midnight. The jury rendered a verdict that she died from the effects of an overdose of opium, administered by her own hand. The deceased was about fifty-three years old, but we are unable this morning to learn any of the particulars of her life. It is probable, however, that she was impelled to destroy her life because of the waywardness of her daughter, who, although white, is the mother of a mulatto child.
