Samuel O. Taylor
DIED,
On Thursday last, the 6th inst., at the residence of his father, in Valparaiso, Ind., of Dysentery, SAMUEL O. TAYLOR, aged 18 years, 6 months and 6 days.
This to us is a mysterious Providence. Although so young, he had succeeded in acquiring an extensive knowledge of nearly all the branches pertaining to a complete English education. From the rapid development of his intellect, his found parents had much to hope. He had been for more than two years a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church. It was nearly a year after his connexion with the Church, before he obtained an evidence of his acceptance with God. From his modest and retiring disposition, he never made what would be termed a loud profession of religion. In conversation with a kind sister in relation to his religious enjoyments, he told her that he never felt more enjoyment than when alone.
He endured his last illness and suffering with resignation and Christian courage. When inquired of during his last illness, if he felt to resign himself to the will of God, he answered, "I do." To another friend, he expressed a strong hope in Christ. To this sentiment he had given utterance only the Sabbath before in the class room. And while we mourn his loss, and sympathise with the deeply afflicted family, "we sorrow not as those who have no hope," and trust he is safe at home. But in the language of the Poet we would add --
In the cold moist earth, we laid him,
E'er the forest cast a leaf;
And we weep that one so lovely,
Should have a life so brief.
