Dayton Stoddard

STODDARD -- at the home of his parents near Tassinong, little DAYTON, son of Heber and Sithera Stoddard, aged nearly four years.

Oh, fold the hands gently,
And close the dark eyes,
And tread the room lightly,
Where dear Dayton lies.

Oh, so cold are his lips,
And still is his heart,
Our darling Dayton's dead,
Alas, we must part.

His short life is done,
His sufferings are o'er,
Farewell, darling son,
We'll see thee no more.

Thy mild spirit left thee
As pure as it found thee,
E'er the cold cares of life
Spread darkness 'round thee.

Sleep on, lovely cherub,
No more shalt thou 'waken,
Thy body lies quietly,
Cold and foresaken.

'No more shall the eyes
Of affection behold thee,
No more shall the arms
Of a parent enfold thee.

Yet our Savior to us
The assurance has given,
That of such as thou art,
Is the Kingdom of Heaven.

MRS. JOHN SHULTZ.
