DIED.
STODDARD. -- At South Chicago, after a brief illness, Mr. Benjamin Stoddard, aged 72 years.
Mr. Stoddard was born in Herkimer county, New York, Feb. 22d, 1808. He was one of a large family of children who were left orphans at an early age, and when but a boy was thrown upon the world to care for himself. In 1836 he was married to Eliza Smith, sister of Sylvester W. Smith, of Valparaiso. The fruit of this union was one son, Henry S. Stoddard, now of Chicago. In 1847, Mr. Stoddard came to this county, settling on Twenty-mile prairie. In 1852 he purchased a farm about a mile north of the village of Wheeler, where he resided until the death of his wife. Through the blessing of God upon the example and influence of a faithful Christian wife, Mr. Stoddard and their son were converted and all of them became members of the Presbyterian church in the Robbins settlement, under the pastoral care of Rev. J. C. Brown, of Valparaiso.
After the death of his beloved wife, in October, 1876, Mr. Stoddard, under deep affliction and desolation, awaited his own departure from this world. Being on a visit to South Chicago, he was taken with a congestive chill from which he never rallied, and on the 13th inst. Expired. His end was peaceful and full of hope. He was greatly esteemed by his neighbors and wherever known. On last Sabbath morning a large congregation attended the funeral services at the Wheeler church, and followe the remains to the grave. He was buried at the cemetery south of Wheeler and near the residence of Mr. Jones.
