SUICIDES IN CHURCH.
While the Congregation is Singing a Hymn a Man Shoots Himself.
LAPORTE, Ind., Nov. 16. -- Charles M. Spencer, whose home is in Belmore, O., committed suicide last Sunday night by sending a bullet crashing through his brain.
Spencer was in attendance at the M. E. church, at Westville, this county, and the tragedy was enacted while the congregation was singing the opening hymn. Spencer sunk to the floor bathed in his own blood while the congregation stood aghast. Spencer used a 32-caliber revolver, and had apparently premeditated the deed and conceived its execution in the church of his faith.
Spencer until recently was the manager of the Postal telegraph company's office at Westville and lately was promoted. He did not appear despondent, and the only motive assigned is that of financial troubles.
