John L. Smith

Rev. John L. Smith Dead.

VALPARAISO, Ind., March 12. -- Rev. John L. Smith, 88, one of the most widely known methodists of Indiana, for many years a circuit rider, is dead. He was licensed as an exhorter in Ohio in 1836, where he was raised on a farm. In 1845 and a few years thereafter he preached in Roberts chapel, corner Pennsylvania and market sts., Indianapolis. He was appointed internal revenue collector, with headquarters at Lafayette, by President Lincoln in 1862. He was once financial agent of the Asbury -- now Depauw -- university. He was married to a Mrs. Sayler when he was 82 years old.
