Eliza Smith

DIED.
STODDARD. -- At her home near Wheeler, Porter county, Indiana, October 1st, 1876, Eliza, wife of Benjamin Stoddard.

The funeral occurred Monday afternoon, and was largely attended, particularly by the early residents of the community. The services were held at the M. E. church, the pastor of the church, assisted by Elder Kennedy of the Baptist church, officiating.

Eliza Smith was born in the town of Hartford, Washington county, N. York, on the 11th day of May, 1808. She was the youngest daughter of a family of eight children, of whom two are now living: Mrs. Sarah Goodwin and S. W. Smith, of Valparaiso. In 1811 she removed to Sacket's Harbor, Jefferson county, New York, where at the age of 16 she was converted and joined the Presbyterian church, of which she has ever since remained a consistent member. In the year 1836 she was married to Benjamin Stoddard. The only child of this marriage was Henry Stoddard, who together with the husband survive her. In 1847 the family came to Indiana and settled on Twenty-mile Prairie, where the deceased has ever since resided. She identified herself as a member of the first Presbyterian church on the prairie, near Mr. S. P. Robbins', organized by the late Rev. J. C. Brown, of Valparaiso. Later she took an active part in establishing a Presbyterian church in Wheeler. Though strongly attached to the church of her choice, she felt at home with all Christian people and took an active part in every religious work. Mrs. Stoddard was a devoted wife, a fond mother and an ever earnest friend and advocate of the unfortunate and the poor. Having lived for her Master, her death was a peaveful one, "For so He giveth His beloved sleep."
