Belle Slater
Horrible Accident.
On Monday last, about noon, Belle Slater, aged about 22, daughter of John Slater, living near the head of Flint Lake on the west side and about 3 1/2 miles north of Valparaiso, went out to call her brother Jackson, aged about 19, to dinner, and as they came in together Jackson said playfully, "I will shoot you," and taking up a gun which he supposed to be empty, fired at Belle's forehead, and penetrated her brain, causing her to fall instantly and die in about a minute without uttering a word. Her father was on the bed in the room, and hurried to Belle. Jackson then asked him if Belle was hurt, and he answered, "Yes, and she won't live two minutes." Jackson then fell in a fainting fit, and continued for many hours a part of the time faint, and a part delirious. Coroner Paramore was notified, and announced a jury of inquest, who, after being sworn and hearing the evidence, made their verdict according to the above stated facts -- that the deceased came to her death by a gun-shot wound in the head accidently inflicted by Jackson Slater her brother.
The funeral of Miss Belle Slater took place on Tuesday at the brick school house, near Flint Lake, and her burial in the old city cemetery.
