Albert Shultz

A HORRIBLE ACCIDENT.
Albert Shultz Run Over and Decapitated by a Lake Shore Train Sunday.

Albert Shultz, a lad of about thirteen years old and son of Herman Shultz, of West Main street, was run over and instantly killed by a Lake Shore freight train near the Chicago & West Michigan crossing Sunday afternoon. The particulars of the shocking affair are as follows: the weather being fine Sunday afternoon a party of boys congregated near the Lake Shore and West Michigan railway crossing and engaged in a game of "shinny." Albert Shultz was one of the company and was the first to propose a ride on an approaching west-bound freight that hove in sight. Suiting the action to the word he started to meet the approaching train which had gained a high rate of speed. He attempted to board a car but failed and fell to the ground. A second attempt was attended with the same result and again the boy sprang at a car catching hold to a fastening to a refrigerator car. The speed of the train jerked him under and the wheels passed over him severing the head from the body, crushing both limbs and laying the chest open in a manner to expose the lungs. It was a horrible sight and the companions of the dead boy were stupified. The brains of the unfortunate youth were scattered over the ties and the dead body was a shapeless mass. Coroner Annis was summoned who ordered the remains taken to Ball's undertaking establishment where they were prepared for burial and where they were viewed by a large number Sunday evening. Monday morning the body was removed to the family residence where the distracted parents wailed in grief. The funeral occurred Tuesday at 10 o'clock from the German Lutheran church.

An inquest was held over the remains Monday morning and a verdict returned in accordance with the facts as published above.

The fate of Albert Shultz should stand as an awful warning to boys who ride freight trains.
